It’s that time again – the OTB Open presented by MVP Disc Sports, has rolled around, and it’s always a highlight on the Disc Golf Pro Tour calendar. This tournament boasts one of the longest courses on the tour, featuring a variety of tight and OB-lined fairways at Swenson Park with plenty of natural OB and tricky winds that keep players on their toes. Year after year, the OTB Open delivers thrills and surprises, making it a must-watch event for disc golf fans everywhere. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the top 5 moments from this year’s action-packed OTB Open!

1) Calvin Heimburg Goes Back-to-Back!

Calvin Heimburg delivered at the 2024 OTB Open, clinching his 2nd consecutive DGPT* event win, going back-to-back for the 1st time in his career. This victory marks Heimburg’s 11th career DGPT* event title, and this is also his 6th DGPT* event win when trailing entering the final round, ranking him 4th in MPO history for such comebacks (with a couple coming from the last 2 events).

Dominating the field, Heimburg shot a -10 Final Round to win by 2-strokes for a total tally of -27. Heimburg led in parked percentage, parking 24% of the holes, and led in reaching C1 in regulation 57% of the time. Additionally, he excelled in strokes gained from tee to green, accumulating an impressive 19.34 strokes throughout the weekend.

This win ties him with Eagle McMahon for the 6th most DGPT* event victories of all time (9). Additionally, he now has the 8th most DGPT* event/PDGA Pro Major wins of all time. Heimburg’s triumph at the OTB Open also continues his multi-win-season streak, marking the 3rd consecutive year he has secured multiple DGPT* event victories.

2) Ella Hansen’s First DGPT Victory!

Ella Hansen has made history by delivering an exceptional performance at the OTB Open, securing her 1st career DGPT* event/PDGA Pro Major win with a standout total score of -25 and an event rating of 1005, her best to date.

Hansen’s victory margin of 7 strokes is the largest in an FPO player’s 1st DGPT* event win since Kona Montgomery’s 12-stroke win at the 2021 WACO. Remarkably, Hansen picked up just 1 OB stroke throughout the weekend, highlighting her precision and control on the fairways at Swenson Park.

Hansen performed especially well in Round 2, shooting the hot round of the event at -12, earning an impressive unofficial round rating of 1034. She dominated the field by leading in both C1 (54%) and C2 (78%) in regulation, and excelling in strokes gained from tee to green (21.32).

This is Hansen’s 2nd podium finish this season since her 2nd place finish at the Invitational. To date across DGPT* events and PDGA Pro Majors, she has accumulated 11 podium finishes (21%), and 33 top-10 finishes (62%). Notably, Hansen also won last year’s Discmania Open, which was a DGPT Silver Event.

Since Hansen’s touring career began in 2021, she has consistently maintained above a 50% top-10 finish rate, improving each year: 50% in 2021, 53% in 2022, 70% in 2023, and 75% (so far) in 2024. This trend positions her as one of the most consistently high-performing players in the FPO division.

3) Gavin Rathbun’s Rally Continues!

Gavin Rathbun continues his stellar 2024 season with a remarkable 2nd place finish at the OTB Open, marking his best career result on Tour and achieving his 2nd highest event rating (1053). This follows his impressive 3rd place finish at the 2021 Des Moines Challenge (1055), which was also the last time he appeared on a final round lead card until the 2024 Dynamic Discs Open. It’s safe to say that Rathbun is heating up!

Rathbun’s back-to-back podium finishes at the DDO and now the OTB Open are a 1st in his career. Notably, Sunday also marked his 4th DGPT* event/PDGA Pro Major final round lead card, and it was the 1st time he led or was tied for the lead entering the final round of such an event.

This performance also gives him his 4th Top-10 finish on Tour this season, setting a new personal best and surpassing his previous record of 3 Top-10 finishes in 2021. Last but certainly not least, before this event, he proposed to his (now fiancée), congratulations to both of you!

4) Randon Latta’s Breakthrough Performance!

Randon Latta delivered an outstanding performance at the OTB Open, securing his very first podium finish on Tour, the best result of his career since his 8th place finish at the 2022 Ledgestone Open—his only other top-10 finish in 39 total events. He also exceeded his average event rating, achieving a personal best event rating of 1052.

Latta also tied the hot round of the weekend with a -13 in his final round, matching Ezra Aderhold’s incredible round 2 score. This marks his 1st hot round at a Tour event*, earning an unofficial single round rating of 1083, his career best, surpassing his previous round rating high of 1073.

5) Gannon Buhr’s Top-10 Streak Ends!

Gannon Buhr finished tied for 13th place at the OTB Open, just 1 stroke shy of breaking into the Top-10. This marks the 1st time since last year’s USDGC that Buhr has missed the Top-10, ending his streak as the only touring MPO pro to maintain a Top-10 finish in every event this season.

Although an unfortunate step back, Buhr has notably continued another streak of being on the lead or chase card for the final round. A feat he’s maintained at every event this year except WACO. The OTB Open is his 9th DGPT event or PDGA Pro Major appearance this season.

Despite narrowly missing the Top-10, Buhr’s showing propelled him to the number 1 spot in DGPT points, surpassing Anthony Barela. This is his 3rd time leading in DGPT points this season.

BONUS) Ohn Scoggins’ Putting on a Show!

Ohn Scoggins secured a solo 4th-place finish at the OTB Open, securing a commendable spot in the top-5. Throughout the tournament, Scoggins showcased her incredible putting skills, leading the field in several key statistics. Notably, she excelled in C2 putting (38%), reaching C2 in regulation (78%), strokes gained from C2 (5.52), average putting distance (17.2 feet), total putting distance (911 feet), and scramble percentage (64%).

A standout moment was her performance on the challenging Hole 10, which proved daunting for many players and averaged over par for all 3 rounds. Despite its difficulty, Scoggins confidently sunk nearly identical death putts on the treacherous green in each round, making her the sole player to birdie the hole in each instance.

* DGPT wins include standard DGPT, DGPT+, and DGPT Playoff events.
