Charlotte’s Legacy Continues! Top Storylines & How to Watch the DGPT Queen City Classic

Charlotte’s place in disc golf history runs deep, and this week the Tour adds another chapter. Long a cornerstone of the sport, the city has played host to moments like Paul McBeth’s first PDGA Pro Worlds title and Nathan Queen’s unforgettable run at the 2021 DGPT Championship. Now, the Disc Golf Pro Tour returns to Hornets Nest Park for the inaugural Queen City Classic presented by Another Round Disc Golf, bringing the sport’s top talent back to one of its most iconic stages.

A proven test for the world’s best, Hornets Nest has stretched beyond 9,000 feet in past layouts and challenges every part of a player’s game. With the Charlotte Disc Golf Club leading preparation efforts, the stage is set for a big weekend as early season momentum continues to build across the field.

Here is how you can tune in and follow all the action this weekend…

WEATHER THIS WEEKEND

The 2026 Queen City Classic in Charlotte, NC will bring a tale of two air masses across the weekend. Friday starts off hot and breezy with highs in the mid to upper 80s and west winds up to 20 mph. A sharp cooldown arrives Saturday, with highs dropping into the upper 50s to low 60s and continued gusty winds out of the NNE. Sunday stays cool in the low to mid 60s, but with lighter winds out of the east, making it the calmest day of the three. No rain is currently in the forecast, so expect dry conditions with a big temperature shift from start to finish.

For any weather-related updates, delays, or safety information, check the DGPT Event Status Updates page.

QUEEN CITY CLASSIC: FPO LOOKAHEAD

  • FPO1 Feature Card: Holyn Handley, Silva Saarinen, Valerie Mandujano, & Anniken Steen
  • FPO2 Feature Card: Missy Gannon, Eveliina Salonen, Henna Blomroos, & Holly Finley

Here’s a look at the top FPO storylines headed into this weekend…

1️⃣ Handley’s Hornets Nest Hunt

Holyn Handley has started 2026 exactly where she left off, topping the DGPT standings through two events with a win at the Big Easy Open and a 2nd at the Supreme Flight Open. She’s the only FPO player to podium in both events so far, and her $55,000 in earnings over the last four events would rank 23rd all-time in FPO Major/Elite Series cash list. With a Match Play Championship win at Hornets Nest in 2025, she heads into the Queen City Classic as both the form player and the one to beat.

2️⃣ Finnish Firepower Returns

Silva Saarinen, Eveliina Salonen, and Henna Blomroos finally make their 2026 DGPT debuts at Queen City, bringing elite firepower to Hornets Nest. Last year, these three claimed half of all FPO Major wins (2 of 4) and 21% of Elite Series victories (4), with 15 combined podiums. Saarinen alone is coming off of a 2025 season in which she podiumed in over half of her M/ES starts and led the field in C2 putting at 27.95%, while Salonen has the most FPO Major Championships in the previous two seasons (3). Their arrival adds immediate intrigue and podium potential to the field.

3️⃣ Ohn Scoggins Eyes a Comeback

Ohn Scoggins follows a win at the Supreme Flight Open with a 4th-place finish at Big Easy, showing her trademark consistency after 18 Top-10s in 2025 out of 20 ES/M events. She’s also no stranger to Hornets Nest, finishing 3rd in the 2025 DGPT Match Play and winning the Carolina Clash (A-tier). Prior to the Big Easy Open, Scoggins had won 7 straight events across all tiers (one B-Tier, 5 A-tiers and one ES) so she is poised to challenge Handley for early-season dominance.

4️⃣ Lisa Fajkus Seeks Her First Win

Lisa Fajkus has started 2026 on a tear with back-to-back Top 5 finishes, taking 4th at Supreme Flight Open and 2nd at Big Easy Open. After recording just two Top 10s across 16 Elite Series and Major starts in 2025, she’s already surpassed that mark in just three events this season. Still, with 139 starts, she remains one of the most active FPO players without a Major or Elite Series win. Can she finally turn this momentum into a breakthrough victory at the Queen City Classic?

5️⃣ North Carolina Natives Make Noise

Hornets Nest gives local players a chance to shine, with Ariel Walker (38 FPO wins in NC), Holly Finley (4), and Tailey Rowley (11) all in the field. Walker’s record in North Carolina is especially impressive, with 38 wins in 51 starts, while Rowley qualified through the Monday Qualifier. Expect plenty of local support and home-course heroics as these North Carolina stars attempt to dominate on familiar turf.

QUEEN CITY CLASSIC: MPO LOOKAHEAD

  • MPO1 Feature Card: Gannon Buhr, Chris Dickerson, Austin Turner, & Evan Smith
  • MPO2 Feature Card: Isaac Robinson, Ezra Robinson, Anthony Anselmo, & Nathan Queen

Here’s a look at the top MPO storylines headed into this weekend…

1️⃣ Clash at the Top: Buhr vs Wysocki

Gannon Buhr and Ricky Wysocki have wasted no time turning 2026 into a head-to-head battle, trading wins and runner-up finishes through two events and sitting tied atop the standings at 275 points each. Buhr extended his streak to five consecutive seasons with a Major or Elite win, joining an exclusive group of just 10 players, while Wysocki continues to hold on the longest streak ever at 14 straight years from 2011 to 2024. With both already locking in back-to-back Top 2 finishes to start the year, Queen City feels like the next chapter in what could become the defining rivalry of the season.

2️⃣ Heimburg and Barela Seek a Reset

For players used to living near the top, the opening stretch has been uncharacteristically quiet for Calvin Heimburg and Anthony Barela. Heimburg’s 21st and 24th place finishes mark a sharp contrast to 2025, when he placed outside the Top 13 just once (28th at Krokhol), while Barela’s 32nd and 33rd place results are a far cry from a season where he finished outside the Top 30 only twice. Both have the pedigree to bounce back quickly, making Hornets Nest a prime opportunity to reset expectations.

3️⃣ The Streak Watch Is On

Consistency is everywhere early in 2026, with Buhr, Wysocki, Isaac Robinson, Adam Hammes, and Aaron Gossage all opening the season with back-to-back Top 10 finishes. Robinson in particular has something extra at stake, as a win this season would extend his streak to five consecutive years with a victory, tying Buhr for the second-longest active run. With so many players stacking solid finishes, Queen City could be where steady play finally turns into a statement win.

4️⃣ The Breakout Watch Continues

A handful of names are already pushing into new territory, led by Luke Taylor, who finished 4th at the Big Easy Open after recording five Top 10s in both 2024 and 2025, and Joseph Anderson, who has jumped to 5th in the standings after a quiet 2025 season with just one Top 10. Chandler Kramer also remains in the mix after a rare Top 5 finish, only the second of his Major or Elite career. With Queen City marking another early-season test, these rising players have a chance to prove their starts are no fluke.

5️⃣ Hornets Nest Brings History Back Into Play

Hornets Nest returns as a stroke play Elite Series stop, bringing with it a deep competitive history that includes the final round of the 2012 PDGA Pro Worlds, where Paul McBeth claimed his first world and Major title. Notably, McBeth did not attend the Big Easy Open, but is registered for the Queen City Classic. The course has also crowned recent DGPT Champions and Match Play winners, making it a proven stage for big moments. With a challenging layout that has produced course records of just 8 under, expect scoring separation and a leaderboard that rewards precision as much as power.

All the action starts on Friday, March 27th! Tune in to the Disc Golf Network and catch post-pro coverage from JomezPro all weekend.
