A lightning recap of the Supreme Flight Open…
MPO Recap:
- Ezra Robinson picked up his first DGPT Elite series victory, setting the course record -12 on Sunday to track down Anthony Barela and earn the win. Ezra finished the weekend at -29, six strokes clear of AB.
- Calvin Heimburg showed up in the final round, shooting -10. Heimburg birdied holes 3-10 and 13-16 with an eagle on the par 5, 15th. Heimburg’s strong Sunday vaulted him up 9 spots for a fifth-place finish.
- Jake Monn had his second-best elite series finish this weekend, ending tied for sixth (-16) with Simon Lizotte.
- Adam Hammes and Austin Turner rounded out the top ten tied for ninth at 15 under par.
MPO Takeaways:
- The warmup down under clearly helped Ezra Robinson be it the extra reps with a new bag or three consecutive second-place finishes. He had a competitive fire in him this weekend that seemed unstoppable after the clutch birdie putt through the sawgrass in the final round no one was going to catch him.
- Calvin locked in for the final round and made a charge. When his putt is on, he is a dangerous competitor. Calvin finished the SFO at 90% C1X and made 30% of his C2 looks.
MPO Players to Watch at the Waco Annual Charity Open:
Ezra Robinson, Anthony Barela, Gannon Buhr, Calvin Heimburg, Chris Dickerson, Paul McBeth, Ricky Wysocki, AB, Jake Monn, and Adam Hammes.
- Ezra is clearly trending in the right direction, with increasingly impressive finishes at Waco the previous years (T-7 2024), I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him on the lead card on Sunday. Ezra Robinson’s accurate and aggressive shot-shaping should translate well to the BEAST.
- Anthony Barela is always a key player to watch and proved that again this weekend despite the loss. His power is off the charts, and if his putt is on, watch out.
- It will be interesting to see how Gannon Buhr responds after a 12th-place finish to open the season. His dominance in 2024 was historic, and after that he is the favorite headed into all events this season. He also is notably dealing with an injury to start the season, we’ll see how that impacts his performance in Texas.
FPO Recap:
- Ella Hansen earned her second Elite Series victory, shooting 13 under par and grabbing back-to-back eagles in a three-way playoff to take it down.
- Holyn Handley and Eveliina Salonen forced the playoff. Salonen birdied 18 to get into the playoff, but struggled on the same hole in the playoff, taking a bogey. Handley matched Hansen’s eagle to force a second playoff hole. Handley carded a bogey in the second run through hole 18. Handley and Salonen finished tied for 2nd.
- Kat Mertsch had a great Sunday, shooting the hot round -8 to vault up the leaderboard and finish in fourth at -11.
- Macie Velediaz rounded out the FPO competitors who ended the tournament at -10 or better. Velediaz shot -1 on the final day and came in fifth at 10 under par.
FPO Takeaways:
- Ella Hansen is clutch! She completed her come-from-behind victory by eagling hole 18 back-to-back in a three-way playoff to get the win over Holyn Handley and Eveliina Salonen. Her determination didn’t waver after a slow start in the final round, and she birdied four holes on the back nine to force the playoff and eventually take down her second elite series victory.
- Macie Velediaz had a good weekend in Florida with a fifth-place finish at -10 under par. She came out the gates hot shooting -4 and -5 in the opening rounds and ended the tournament with a one under par outing on Sunday.
FPO Players to Watch at the Waco Annual Charity Open:
Missy Gannon, Kat Mertsch, Eveliina Salonen, and Kristin Lätt.
- Kristin travels back to the states for her 2025 DGPT debut at WACO. She is competing for her third straight WACO title this weekend.
- Missy Gannon will be competitive for the win at WACO this week. A tough performance at SFO combined with her competitive nature will lead to a spark and a strong showing.
- Kat Mertsch could be dangerous. After putting up the hot round -8 on Sunday to track down Macie Velediaz and earn solo fourth place, Mertsch is definitely a player to look out for and could break through for a win.
- Salonen has the distance and will be competitive regardless of her play on the green. That said, if she can increase her putting percentage from circle one, she will be hard to top.
