Weese picks up where she left off

In the first round at the Ledgstone Insurance Open presented by Discraft, Jessica kept it going as if there had been no break. The Disc Golf Pro Tour has been on a hiatus since the Utah Open presented by Latitude 64, which wrapped up nearly two months ago. Jessica Weese, won the Utah Open over Catrina Allen in a three hole playoff. She won with great drives and good enough putting.

She started hot and finished hot. Through the first five holes she was four down and she carded birdies on the final three holes (holes 1-3 since the round started on hole 4). She had looks at birdies on over 70% of the holes, which compares favorably to Valarie Jenkins (50%) and Ragna Bygde (56%) who sit in 2nd and 3rd respectively. She missed four putts in Circle 1 but made up for half of those with throw ins on holes 1 & 14.

Valarie Jenkins, who is one shot behind, did it with her putter, hitting 100% of her C1 putts. She also had a 100% scramble rate. These two stats combined to make her the only player to go bogey free. She missed both of her Circle 2 (C2) putts but the place she really needs to clean up is off the tee. With her rock solid putting, if she can give herself more opportunities inside the circles, Valarie could easily end up on top after Round 4.

Ragna Bygde, one of the best European players, showed that she can hang with the Americans on their home turf. Today her putter was on fire, as she was 5 of 10 in C2. Three of her five birdies came off C2 putts. If she can clean up her drives and give herself some more putts, even from C2, she can easily close the gap to Jessica and Val.

A Tale of Two Courses

Tomorrow the ladies head to Sunset Hills which is a longer, more open course. It will be interesting to see if the longest throwers on tour, Paige Pierce (-2, 4th) and Catrina Allen (E, 8th), can make up some ground tomorrow. If they can’t, Jessica has put herself in a great position to win two Pro Tour events in a row.
