Last year the Utah Open made its debut in the Disc Golf Pro Tour. In 2017 it was Jessica Weese and Ricky Wysocki who took the title for the open divisions.
As we headed into the 2018 Utah there were many questions:
Paige, but not that PaigeThrough the first two rounds of the Utah Open presented by Prodigy Disc, there is a story making headlines in FPO: Paige Bjerkaas is the real deal!
We saw Paige put on an impressive show at the Beaver State Fling. But as a young player whom we have not seen much, it was natural to wonder if it was a fluke. But today Paige squashed that! After shooting a 942 rated round, one Paige decided to turn it up. She came in with the hot round, shooting only two over par. That is a 973 rated round!
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to give Bjerkaas the lead.
Catrina Allen, thanks to a solid first round, remains at the top of the leaderboard. With a 63 in round two, she will enter the final round of the Utah Open with a one-stroke leader over Bjerkaas.
Not to be outdone, Jessica Weese and Lisa Fajkus retain their spots on the lead card.
Will the experience of Weese and Fajkus be enough to over Catrina who has found her stride? Will Paige continue to impress? We will have to find out on Sunday!
Sexton Golf WorksAt the start of the 2018 Disc Golf season, Eagle McMahon made it clear that he wanted to change his competition philosophy. Sexton golf is what he called is.
And it’s working! Eagle’s smoking hot round of 51 was enough to bump him to third place and put him on the lead card.
Nate Perkins (another long thrower from team Discmania) also came into the clubhouse shooting a 51. But with a rough round one, it wasn’t enough to bump him to the lead card. Nate will have to be content with 16th place going into Sunday.
Ricky Wysocki took over first place from Paul McBeth, who took a sharp drop to 5th. Paul is going to have to channel the beast if he hopes to take down his first Utah Open.
Ricky and Eagle are joined on the lead card by Joel Freeman and Austin Hannum. Joel made a national name for himself with his performance at the 2018 Las Vegas Challenge.
Austin Hannum is a player who most casual fans may not know. Austin is sponsored by Prodiscus and is rated 1009. With a solid showing, Hannum will hope to use this tournament as a jumping off point for his professional disc golf career.
