The Memorial, FPO Day One: Usual Suspects Top Crowded Leaderboard

Day one of the Memorial Championship presented by Discraft left the usual suspects jockeying for position on the top of the FPO leaderboard. When the dust settled, five women were
tied or within one stroke of the lead after Wednesday’s round at the iconic Fountain Hills course. Paige Pierce, Catrina Allen, and Sarah Hokom are tied for the division’s top spot with all three women finishing at 2-under par, 54. Jennifer Allen and Jessica Weese sit just one stroke out of the lead after throwing 1-under par, 55s. An additional five women are within four strokes with plenty of golf yet to be played.
Although Paige and Catrina find themselves tied for the lead, both ladies had poor days on the putting green. Allen missed six putts within Circle 1 for a rate of 74% and Pierce’s seven misses put her at 72% on the day. The two ladies rank 23rd and 24th in that category in the 26 person field. Their poor putting performance was countered by their impressive drives off the tee. Pierce led the field with 78% fairway hits and managed to put 56% of her drives with Circle 1 in regulation. Allen ranked third in fairway hits at 61% and put 44% of her drives within Circle 1. If Allen and Pierce can improve on their putting stroke, they have a real opportunity to set themselves apart from the field.
Paige Pierce’s Day One Stats
Catrina Allen’s Day One StatsWhile Pierce and Allen were struggling on the putting green, Sarah Hokom was able to play solid, consistent golf in order to capture her share of the lead. Hokom was within the top seven in every single statistical category and was able to utilize her patented sidearm and her conservative game plan to put herself in a solid position going into day two.
Sarah Hokom’s Day One StatsTomorrow’s action moves to the Vista Del Camino course and you can guarantee that each woman will be looking to set herself apart from the field. Will Catrina Allen and Paige Pierce be able to improve on their putting and make it a two horse race or will Sarah Hokom or one of the many other women within striking distance find a way to grab the lead?
