Sarah Soars: Jonesboro Open FPO Round 2

The second round at The Spartan Mowers / R&R Farm Equipment Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus saw the women’s division heat up almost immediately. The leader Paige Pierce had a two stroke cushion over Sarah Hokom but early on, the lead fell and the top spot switched several times. Today, the ladies came to play!

Jennifer Allen may not have had the first round scores that she envisioned, but with the initial round behind her, she had no problem using her gift of power to take down some holes and quickly reemerge as a dominant force. Playing from the second card, Jennifer found her groove. She birdied the monster 585 foot hole #4 and carded four birdies the first half of the round, unfortunately she also carded two bogeys to stall an amazing front nine. On her back nine it was off to the races. Jennifer carded two more birdies, to bring her total to 6 for the day. She shot the hot round of the day, with a four under par, and bringing her total to even for the tournament and current position in fourth.

The leader starting the day, Paige Pierce, made easy work of some very long holes including a birdie on hole #4 and hole #5 both combining for 1,200 total feet for just these two holes alone.

The difference between Paige’s first round to her second was the addition of some unwanted Bogeys and even double bogeys. In total she shot six holes under par which cost at least eight strokes on the day. Paige has many strengths as a premier disc golfer and one of them is her ability to change her attitude and with it the direction of her game. When she cards a high score on a hole, she often finds a way to repair the damage on the very next one. With her recovery skills and game management she forces her rivals to beat her with every round thrown. Unfortunately her fairway hits dropped to 57.89% and her scrambling rate plummeted to 37.5%. The course was not kind to Paige today as she carded four bogeys and two double bogeys dropping from first place to third behind Sarah Hokom and Jessica Weese.

Jessica Weese showed tremendous ability on the course today as she had some holes that she struggled on, but kept her head and maintained her score even late in the rounds. Jessica continued her stellar putting with 17 of 18 circle 1 putting 94.44%.

Weese had high fairway hits percentage, 68%. Combined with a 70% scrambling rate to hold her score down and one under par for the day and a 3 under par for the tournament, sliding her into second place headed into round three

Sarah Hokom played very smart, solid disc golf during her second round. Her scores were not flashy but they were consistent. On the front nine, she earned a birdie and a bogey with all pars mixed in between. On the back nine, Sarah played clean and carded three additional birdies. She was first in greens in regulation for both circle 1 and 2, which seemed to make all the difference.

Sarah’s strong play enabled her to overtake Paige Pierce. Her five under par for the tournament puts her on top of the leaderboard going into day three.

My game seems to be the opposite of Paige Pierce. Any time I birdie a hole, I’ll immediately bogey the next one. I attribute it to the universe correcting it’s fundamental equilibrium
