Paige Pierce is so dominant right now that even when she struggles, she is still shooting better than everyone else. Case in point, Pierce only managed to convert
on 73% of her circle one putts, missing six, en route to a 1-over par, 61. Even with Pierce’s struggles, her round was still good enough for the hot round of the day in the FPO division. She is now 3-under par for the tournament and six strokes ahead of the nearest competitor, Sarah Hokom.
Pierce was fairly accurate off the tee, hitting 61 percent of fairways but still found herself with three bogies and one double bogey on the tough Vista del Camino Course. These blemishes can in large part be attributed to Pierce’s four out of bounds penalties. Paige did score four birdies on the day, including hole 8 and hole 10, with huge putts from circle two. Pierce will look to complete her wire-to-wire victory on Saturday as the action moves to Fountain Hills, a course Pierce tore up in the first round shooting a 3-under par, 53.
If anyone is in a position to challenge Pierce on the tournament’s final day, it’s Sarah Hokom. Hokom avoided the out of bounds penalties on Friday but had her own putting woes as the 2012 world champion missed six circle one putts. Hokom finished at 2-over par, 62, to put her at 3-over par for the event. Hokom will look to push Pierce on Saturday and try to make up ground on her six stroke deficit.
Other notable scores include a 3-over par, 63, by Catrina Allen to put herself at 9-over par for the tournament. Allen finds herself in third place and 12 strokes off the lead going into the last day of the event. Madison Walker, who threw yesterday’s hot round, struggled to a 7-over par, 67. Walker is now in a tie for the fourth spot with Jessica Weese who shot a 2-over par, 62.
Will Pierce continue her dominance or will Hokom or another competitor make a heroic comeback to challenge her? Tune in tomorrow as the Memorial Championship presented by Discraft continues to find out.
