Sarah Hokom has been a staple on the lead card throughout the 2017 Disc Golf Pro Tour season. In the first two events, Hokom was constantly playing catchup to Paige Pierce. That was not the case at Day One of the Nick Hyde Memorial powered by Innova and Hyzerbomb as Sarah finished the round in first place. Hokom used strong putting within circle 1 to shoot a 3-under par, 61, to jump out to an early one stroke lead over Paige Pierce (-2). Tied for third, Catrina Allen (+1) and Jennifer Allen (+1) round out the top four.
When we previewed the Nick Hyde, we noted that Hokom’s putting in the early part of the season had not been up to the standard she had set last year. Going into the event, she was putting 80% within circle 1 which was down from her tour leading 89% in 2016. Today, Sarah only missed one putt within circle 1 to put herself at 95% for the round. With a strong putting performance combined with hitting circle 2 in regulation at a rate at 61%, it’s no surprise that she is the leader going into Saturday. It will take another strong showing from Hokom tomorrow to hold off the tour points leader, Paige Pierce, who is only one stroke back.
Pierce finds herself in an unusual position after having wire-to-wire leads through the tour’s first two events. Paige was accurate off the tee and accumulating an 89% rate on fairways hit. Inside circle 1, she knocked down 80% of her putts and she also added one circle 2 putt, making her 20% in that category. Pierce had one O.B. throw on the day, going out of bounds on hole two on her way to a bogey five. She will look to make some slight adjustments in order to try and surpass Hokom on Saturday.
Catrina Allen could have found herself on top of the leaderboard on Friday, but she struggled mightily putting. Allen was only able to putt at a rate of 69% inside circle 1 and did not make any circle 2 putts. Overall, Catrina shot a 1-over par, 65 to find herself in a tie with Jennifer Allen for third place.
