Idlewild Open Presented by Innova MPO Round 1 Finish: Just Add Water

After an early pause on play yesterday, Kevin Jones is in first place with a stunning 10 under par. Trailing him by only 1 throw is none other than McBeast at 9 under par. The two may not face off on the same card this afternoon but that won’t stop them from pushing as hard as they can.
BURLINGTON, KY– The weather arrived a little early yesterday at Idlewild, much to the frustration and disappointment of spectators and competitors. While only a small weather delay hampered the FPO field that was able to finish their round completely, the storms intensified in the afternoon and canceled the remainder of the round for the men’s field. This morning, the men were all able to finish thanks to calmer conditions. However, due to the intense weather delay, round two cards will be the same as round one, despite the scores from round one.

Scoring separation is what this course promises, and it delivered today. Kevin Jones is the current leader, shooting an incredible -10, recording only a single bogey and a remarkable 75% Scramble. Pinning down accurate tee shots will help anyone reduce strokes on this course, but an ability to Scramble well also enhances a competitive edge. Having only finished hole 1 yesterday with the feature card group, Paul McBeth is now a single stroke back in second place. McBeth finished this morning with an astonishing 89% Scramble, eight birdies, an eagle, and 93% Circle 1 Putting. The remainder of the men’s field really felt the difficulty that Idlewild presents in the first round, but everyone in the top 10 shot -4 or better, which is no small feat.

RAIN CHANCE: With more storms in the forecast for the afternoon, the MPO field will be checking the weather constantly to see what kind of nasty conditions mother nature is brewing for their tee time.
For the first round, the course averaged about five strokes over par, as most of the field struggled just to play for par. Hole 13 was a point of frustration for many, and accordingly the most difficult for the round, averaging 1.25 strokes over par for the whole day. Hole 18 played as the second most difficult to par, at 1.03 strokes over. With more storms in the forecast for today, the men will be challenged even more in the adverse conditions, with opportunities afoot for more scoring separation for those who can capitalize in the rain.
