The Disc Golf Pro Tour headed to the beautiful Disc Side of Heaven course for the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus. The weather might have been chilly but there was plenty of hot
play with Garrett Gurthie leading the way on the MPO side with a 14-under par 50 and Paige Pierce jumping out to an early lead in FPO with a 12-under 54. Here are the signature moments from round one.
The Disc Side of Heaven Course lends a chance for aggressive players to try and steal some strokes with eagle opportunities. Several players took advantage of the minimal wind and scored eagles to help pad their scores. On the FPO side, hole nine was the spot for eagle. The 715 par five was birdied by your leader, Paige Pierce, and Kona Panis. Pierce made the hole look easy, parking her second shot and tapping in for eagle. Panis, got within circle one with her second shot and capitalized on the 27 footer to score the eagle.
On the MPO side, hole 16 was the place to be for eagle sightings. 12 players managed an eagle on the 855 par five that plays over water including notable names such as Garrett Gurthie, Ricky Wysocki, Paul McBeth, and Will Schusterick.
The Disc Side of Heaven course finishes with two tough par fours. On the MPO side, only two people were able to finish the day with consecutive birdies. Will Schusterick shot five-under through the last four holes including birdies on 17 and 18. Schusterick finished the day 10-under par and in a tie for sixth.
In FPO, Paige Pierce, Sarah Hokom, and Rebecca Cox each got the last two holes. Pierce has a seven-stroke lead on the field while Hokom sits in third place after shooting a 4-under 62. Cox birdied the last four holes to finish at 1-under for the day and in seventh.
Hole 18 is one of the toughest hole on the Disc Side of Heaven course and the hole showed its teeth to Kona Panis on Friday. Going into the hole, Panis was in second place at 5-under par but a double bogey, including an OB stroke, caused her to finish 3-under for the day and in fifth place.
The first round of the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus provided plenty of action and exciting moments. The second day of the three-day event continues tomorrow with live coveragestarting at 4:15 E.T.
