The Des Moines Challenge has only been on the Disc Golf Pro Tour for 3 seasons, and each season they have raised the bar when it comes to payout, this year they’ve catapulted to new heights with a staggering pro purse of over $100,000.

The 2023 TruBank Des Moines Challenge, presented by Discraft, has a rich history spanning 32 years. The event spent 18 of those years on the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) A-tier schedule, and the last 3 years on the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT). In 2022, the Iowa-based event etched its name in history by setting a new 3-round DGPT event record pro purse of $100,526.

This year, thanks to the remarkable dedication of the event team and the unwavering support from the Des Moines community, the pro purse reached an impressive total of $110,005, marking a 10% increase within just one year’s time, and setting a NEW 3-day DGPT event record for total payout.

When asked about setting the 3-day DGPT event record for total payout in back-to-back seasons, Tournament Director Ty Tannatt said,

Setting the record for the highest 3-day purse is a major accomplishment for our team. It wouldn’t be possible without the support of TruBank, Discraft, our local community, and our sponsorship director Keegan Reed. Our sponsors know their funds are not only going to a large purse but to incredible new additions to the course that anyone can utilize throughout the year.

Jeff Spring, CEO, and Tour Director of DGPT has also emphasized the significance of this milestone in the evolution of professional disc golf:

“We are proud of the DMC team, thankful for the support of the greater Des Moines Community, and appreciative of the event partners for their role in making this event a huge success!”

The Des Moines Challenge’s achievement is a testament to the increasing appeal of disc golf, as it surpasses the financial threshold set by previous 4-day DGPT events such as Worlds and the DGPT Pro Tour Championship. During this decade, the total purse for Worlds has more than quadrupled, surging from $33,782 in 2010 to $200,000 in 2022. Even more impressive is the pro purse of the 2022 edition of the DGPT’s Tour finale. The renowned DGPT Pro Tour Championship had the largest tournament payout in the history of disc golf with a total purse of $302,000.

The event preceding this year’s Des Moines Challenge, the 2023 Dynamic Discs Open (DDO), further emphasizes a rise in the sport’s financial rewards. DDO achieved a pro purse of $85,089 this year, marking yet another increase compared to its 2022 purse of $77,951. This progression follows the trends of other tournaments with significant purses and reflects the growth and popularity of professional disc golf, which has continued to increase with the intense rise in competition.

Increasing payouts in the DGPT is essential for enhancing the sport’s professionalism and promoting inclusivity. Higher prize pools motivate athletes, attract sponsors, and signal the growth and viability of disc golf as a competitive endeavor.

By allocating substantial payouts to women’s divisions, the tour can also contribute to narrowing the gender gap and fostering diversity.  Overall, increasing payouts is crucial for the long-term success and development of professional disc golf, solidifying its status as a respected and rewarding sport.

With the World Championships on the horizon and the DGPT playoffs following shortly afterward, the TruBank Des Moines Challenge marks the halfway point of the regular Elite Series season, setting a new standard for the financial prospects of the athletes and strengthening the foundation of professional disc golf.

As the sport continues to grow in popularity and recognition, professional disc golfers can look forward to even greater opportunities and rewards in the future.
