Aria Castruita - Rising in the Rankings at 17

Aria Castruita, age seventeen, stunned spectators and competitors with her incredible performance last month at the 2023 Jonesboro Open presented by Prodigy. Before the Jonesboro Open she was ranked 31st in the FPO UDisc World Rankings. After coming in third at the event, she is now ranked 19th, with her phenomenal performance improving her world ranking by twelve spots. Castruita beat out major names (and Major Champions) like Kristin Tattar, Catrina Allen, and Missy Gannon for her first podium finish on the Disc Golf Pro Tour.

Over the weekend, the young disc golfer displayed her immense talent and poise under pressure. In previous years, the top FPO players had a firm grip on Jonesboro, but this time around, things were different. Aria’s impressive performance at the course, which typically favored the strengths of the top players, is an excellent example of a young competitor excelling. What does this mean for Aria’s future prospects as a player? Pierce, Allen, and Tattar demonstrated their versatile skill sets at the previous Jonesboro Open. Aria possesses a similar, well-rounded game with all the significant pieces, which could be a glimpse into her future career as a top-level competitor.

Castruita successfully navigated the Disc Side of Heaven, making her way to 19 under par for the event. She hit the fairway on her drives 87% of the time (good for 3rd best in the field), had a putt for birdie from circle 2 on 80% of holes (2nd), and converted a scramble for par or better 67% of the time (3rd).  She averaged a 989 rating for the event with her 9 under first round coming in at a rating of 1005.

Castruita began playing disc golf in 2011 at the age of 5  and it’s a family affair as her sisters Melody and Haley are also up-and-coming young disc golf stars. Aria only began touring as a pro in 2022, but she has had many notable achievements throughout her amateur disc golf career, including several top finishes at big tournaments.

Aria Castruita - Rising in the Rankings at 17

In 2019, she finished 2nd in the FJ15 division at the PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships, and in 2021, she took down the NADGT National Championships. In 2022 Aria was chosen as the PDGA Rookie of the Year capping off a successful first year as a touring pro. We are excited to see her continue to rise in rankings and rack up more podium finishes on the Disc Golf Pro Tour.
