Most kids have posters on their walls. For my generation, it was the likes of Larry Bird or Kareem Abdul Jabaar or Terry Bradshaw or KISS. The poster on my wall was not of anyone, it was a motivational phrase, “Every commitment whether great or small starts with the same two words:I’ll try.” Thanks mom, real cool.
The Pro Tour’s final event, the Green Mountain Championships presented by Discraft, sold out in 15 minutes after general registration opened. With the event being sold out, the only way to get in now is via the wait list or by earning a Pro Tour Exemption, which means they have a spot reserved, but that they still need to pay the normal event entry fees.
The year is 2016. Less than 10% of the PDGA’s membership is women. One possible takeaway is that women do not like to play disc golf and/or join organizations. Another is that disc golf has, for decades, not paid enough to attention women and to growing the women’s side of the sport. Clearly women’s participation outside the PDGA is larger than 10%, but it is still nowhere near 30%. Our sport has a very big opportunity to grow our base of players, and we can do it pretty easily.
