High Stakes in Peoria: Top Storylines & How to Watch the 2025 Discraft Ledgestone Open
The Discraft Ledgestone Open presented by ZÜCA returns to Peoria, Illinois, this week as a DGPT+ Event for the second straight year, bringing its trademark blend of challenging courses and massive payouts. What began in 2011 as an unsanctioned local tournament has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious events in the sport. As a founding stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour, Ledgestone has become a fixture on the competitive calendar, with longtime title sponsor Discraft playing a key role in elevating it to premier status.
This year’s test will push players to their limits. The FPO field will take on Northwood Black Shorts in Rounds 1 & 4, and Sunset Hills in Rounds 2 & 3, while MPO will battle Lake Eureka Temp in Rounds 1 & 4 and tackle the punishing Northwood Black Longs in Rounds 2 & 3. After a long journey back from the European swing, athletes will face tight OB lines, daunting fairways, and high-risk, high-reward shotmaking that could decide the tournament.

The 2025 Discraft Ledgestone Open in Peoria is set for a warm and mostly dry stretch, perfect for big drives—though you might break more of a sweat than usual. Thursday kicks things off comfortably in the mid-80s under clear skies, but from Friday through Sunday, highs climb into the upper 80s and low 90s, with feels-like temps potentially topping 100 thanks to elevated WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) levels. Winds will stay light and shift gradually from the southeast to the southwest over the four days. Saturday is looking like the hottest round, while Sunday brings the only slight rain chance with a stray shower or thunderstorm possible. Here’s a look at the top storylines headed into this weekend:
1️⃣ Holyn Handley’s Title Defense
Holyn Handley arrives in Peoria with four DGPT wins in 2025 and a perfect 14-for-14 record on Top-10 finishes this season — a level of consistency matched only by Hailey King, who has played 4 events this season and placed in the top 10 at each one. Handley is also the defending Ledgestone champion, having shredded Sunset Hills with 1000-rated golf last year. But this year’s test adds the notoriously punishing Northwood Black back into the mix, a course where she managed just 965-rated play at the 2024 Champions Cup. Tied for the most wins on tour this year with Silva Saarinen, Handley has been nearly unstoppable in open-style scoring environments. The question now is whether she can replicate that dominance in the tight, wooded corridors that have humbled many of the sport’s best.
2️⃣ U.S. Players top the Field?
With European stars Silva Saarinen, Kristin Latt, and Eveliina Salonen all skipping Ledgestone, the path to the podium is wide open for U.S. contenders. In its decade-long DGPT history, the Ledgestone Open has never been won by a non-American in the FPO division, and this year’s field may keep that streak alive. That doesn’t mean the battle will be easy — the American field is stacked with multiple Major champions and players in top form. Still, the absence of three of the top 10 in the DGPT standings means the event could have a distinctly home-soil flavor when trophies are handed out.
3️⃣ Big Money Missy Going for No. 3
Missy Gannon has already proven she’s built for the big stage, with Ledgestone titles in both 2022 and 2023. She’s one of just five FPO players to win multiple Major/Elite events this year, and her history on these courses is rock solid — seven Top-10 finishes in nine career starts here or on the Northwood/Sunset combo. Gannon is also within striking distance of Kristin Latt for the all-time FPO career earnings record. A third Ledgestone win wouldn’t just add to her trophy case — it could also put her back atop the sport’s “big money” leaderboard.
4️⃣ Ohn Scoggins Chasing Another Crown
Fresh off a historic season where she became the first player to win both Pro Worlds and Masters Worlds in the same year, Ohn Scoggins is proving that age is no barrier to elite performance. She finished second at last year’s Champions Cup on Northwood Black and fifth at Ledgestone on Sunset Hills — two courses that reward a blend of accuracy and controlled aggression. Scoggins has thrived in these hybrid-course events before, and a win here would add another layer to her remarkable career renaissance. With her current world ranking of fifth, she’s also in a prime position to shake up the DGPT points race.
5️⃣ Podium Push from the Chase Pack
While the headlines often go to the big names, several players are poised to make big runs in Peoria. Ella Hansen enters on a three-event podium streak, Hailey King is a perfect 4-for-4 on Top-10s in 2025, and Cadence Burge continues to build her résumé with a win and five podiums this season. Hannah Huynh has been a breakout story, already doubling her career total of Major/Elite Top-10s in just this season alone. Any of them could be in contention by Championship Sunday, especially if the wooded grind of Northwood Black forces mistakes from the favorites.

1️⃣ Gannon Buhr Chasing Back-to-Back Ledgestone Titles
Gannon Buhr’s 2024 Ledgestone victory was one of the most dominant DGPT performances in recent memory (7 strokes) — and now he comes in as the reigning champion at both Ledgestone and the PDGA Pro World Championships. The 20-year-old also teamed with Missy Gannon to bring home gold for Team USA at the World Games last weekend, and he’s carrying the largest DGPT World Standings lead in history (344.67 points). Buhr already has four Major/Elite wins this year — most in the division — and has podiumed twice in just four Ledgestone starts. If he wins again, he’d join Paul McBeth and Ricky Wysocki in the conversation for modern Ledgestone dominance.
2️⃣ Ricky Wysocki’s Streak on the Line
From 2020 to 2022, Ricky Wysocki made Ledgestone his personal playground, winning three straight titles (including a tie in 2021 with Calvin Heimburg). He’s hit the podium in seven straight events at Ledgestone courses, including Majors and Worlds, and is the all-time Ledgestone money leader at $41,188. But here’s the consideration — Wysocki hasn’t won a Major or Elite event since July 2024. That’s a problem for a player who has won at least one such event every single year since 2011. With his 14-year streak on the line, this could be the most important Ledgestone of Wysocki’s career.
3️⃣ Calvin Heimburg Aiming to Keep His Two-Win Season Streak Alive
For three straight years (2022–2024), Calvin Heimburg has notched exactly two Major/Elite wins. So far in 2025, he’s only got one — the European Disc Golf Festival — which means Ledgestone could be his chance to keep that pattern alive. He’s no stranger to success in Peoria, winning here in 2021 (tie with Wysocki), finishing runner-up in 2023, and hitting the podium in 2024. With five career top-10s at Ledgestone, “Vinny” has the consistency — the question is whether he can add another trophy before the season is done.
4️⃣ Paul McBeth Returns to Familiar Ground
Paul McBeth has been very good on these courses. He’s a two-time Ledgestone champion (2016, 2019) and also won the 2019 Worlds title here, carding the iconic 1084-rated round at Eureka Temp. While he missed the event in 2023, he was second in 2022 and has six Ledgestone podiums overall. In just four Major/Elite starts in Europe this season, he’s already got three podiums and four top-10s. The five-time World Champion knows how to peak at the right time, and Ledgestone could be the perfect launchpad for his late-season push.
5️⃣ Anthony Barela Looking to Recapture 2024 Form
Anthony Barela was a four-win machine in 2024 — but this season has been more uneven, with just one Major/Elite victory so far. Even so, he’s risen to second in the DGPT standings, up from eighth at the end of last year. His Ledgestone history, however, has been underwhelming: just one top-5 and one top-10 in six career starts. If Barela wants to prove he can contend on every type of course, handling the tight lines of Northwood Black and the OB pressure of Eureka Temp would be a statement win.
