Silva Saarinen Makes History: Top 3 Moments from the 2024 Turku Open!

By Nick Quargnenti

1) Silva Saarinen Sweeps Finland!

Silva Saarinen’s breakthrough victory at the 2024 Turku Open presented by Prodigy is a highlight of the DGPT season, marking her first-ever Tour event* win. This triumph not only completed a “Finnish sweep” with back-to-back wins in Finland, including the Heinola Open (notably a DGPT Europe Silver event), but also saw her outplay top contenders Eveliina Salonen and Henna Blomroos.

Saarinen led in Birdie Percentage (43%), C2 Putting (45%), Total Putt Distance (946′), and Average Putt Distance (17.5′), and tied for the hot round of -8 with Eveliina Salonen, both achieved during Round 2, respectively.

Saarinen’s remarkable spring streak, beginning in April, includes consistent top-10 finishes in her last 7 Tour events* (including DGPT Europe Silver events), top-5 in the last 5, and now 3 consecutive wins. This streak was potentially propelled by the momentum of her 4th place finish at the PDGA Champions Cup, setting her on a path to 4 consecutive podium finishes.

The 2024 PDGA Champions Cup marked a significant milestone for Saarinen because this is where she achieved her first top-5 finish at a Tour event* and earned her highest career event rating of 988. This potentially signaled a turning point in her career and certainly gave her a confidence boost that she capitalized on in the early part of the 2024 summer season.

Saarinen’s ascent to the Pro Tour began in 2023, starting with her debut at the Music City Open. That season, she achieved her best Tour event* finish with a 6th place at the PDGA World Championship, her only top-10 finish on the Tour at that time. However, she truly shined on the 2023 PDGA Euro Tour, where she impressively won all 5 events she competed in.

Saarinen’s talent didn’t go unnoticed in 2023, as she was named the DGPT Rookie of the Year. Her impressive putting skills were a major factor, with season stats ranking her 2nd in both C1X Putts (83%) and Circle 2 Putts (20%).

Saarinen is currently ranked 14th in the DGPT World Standings, showing that her European event attendance adds valuable Tour points. With her impressive stats and growing momentum, Saarinen is definitely a rising star to watch this season. I think it’s safe to say we’re all excited to see what she achieves next.

2) Niklas Anttila Secures 2nd DGPT Victory!

Niklas Anttila’s winning performance at the 2024 Turku Open marked his 2nd Tour event* victory this season, following his earlier triumph at the Open at Austin. This win ties him with notable players like Gregg Barsby and Nathan Sexton, making him the 36th player in history to secure multiple MPO DGPT event*/PDGA Pro Major wins.

Anttila dominated the tournament, leading in Birdie Percentage (56%), reaching C1 (57%) and C2 (81%) in Regulation, and Strokes Gained from Tee-to-Green (23.44). His stellar play also includes the hot round of the rainy final day with an impressive -12.

With 5 podium finishes and 9 top-10s in 12 Tour events* this season, Anttila has now surged ahead of Ricky Wysocki to claim 2nd place in the DGPT World Standings. Not to mention, he currently leads the MPO field in Fairway Hits percentage at 80.2% this season. After this performance, Anttila is far from done this season.

3) Turku Open Triumphs!

Several standout performances made waves at the Turku Open. 16-year-old Oiva Päivänsalo from Veikkola, Finland, made an impressive debut in his first DGPT event, highlighted by a remarkable -8 round during Round 2, where he excelled with an impressive 44% Circle 2 putting accuracy. Despite his youth, Päivänsalo secured a spot on the lead card for the Final Round, finishing the tournament in a commendable tie for 22nd place.

James Proctor continues to showcase his European prowess with a 2nd place finish, leading the field with a 22% Parked rate and securing his best result of the season so far. This marks his 2nd Tour event* podium in European events after last year’s PCS Open in Norway. Despite a victory still alluding him, Proctor sits in 26th place in the DGPT World Standings, and he currently leads the MPO field in C2 Putting so far this season (38.19%). This podium finish may mark a potential turning point for his return to form.

Meanwhile, Eveliina Salonen demonstrated her season dominance with a solo 2nd place finish, leading in Fairway Hits (81%) and stats in C1 (54%) and C2 (76%) in Regulation, alongside a notable Strokes Gained From Tee-to-Green (23.84). Notably, Eveliina also leads the FPO field in reaching both C1 (45.56%) and C2 (69.63%) in regulation. This marks Salonen’s 6th podium finish of the season, including 3 consecutive top finishes, highlighting her consistency on Tour.

* DGPT wins include standard DGPT, DGPT+, and DGPT Playoff events.
