2023 USDGC & Throw Pink Championship: Everything You Need To Know

The Disc Golf Network has just announced its content offerings for the 2023 United States Disc Golf Championship (USDGC) and Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship (TPWDGC). Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect.

Q:
What makes Disc Golf Network’s coverage of the 2023 USDGC and TPWDGC different than an average weekend during the season?

A: The Disc Golf Network collaborates with tournament organizers yearly to obtain broadcasting rights for the 2023 USDGC and TPWDGC. This event has been taking place for over 25 years, and a great deal of effort is consistently invested in its organization. As a result of this esteemed status, broadcasting rights are quite costly. This same process occurs each year for the USDGC and the European Open. The USDGC and the European Open are unique because of these media rights deals; thus, the media distribution plan looks a bit different for these two events compared to a standard weekend on Tour.

If you’re not familiar, media rights for sports events refer to licenses or permissions that broadcasters (like Disc Golf Network) purchase from sports organizations (such as USDGC) to broadcast or distribute their events. It’s similar to buying a ticket to a tournament, but instead of just one person, you’re buying it for potentially millions of viewers who will watch it on their screens at home or on their mobile devices.

Inherent in the media rights purchase is the collaborative development of a media distribution plan that is approved by both US Disc Golf (who owns and operates the USDGC) and the Disc Golf Network. The USDGC media plan prioritizes live broadcasting and provides additional post-pro coverage options and bonus content for fans, with a majority of the content available exclusively on the Disc Golf Network platform.

Q: What can Disc Golf Network subscribers expect from these events?

A: Subscribers to the Disc Golf Network will access a comprehensive package of benefits, including extensive live coverage of every round, exclusive post-production content, and an exciting Monday preview show that offers live action from the qualifying round, among other exclusive features. One of the key advantages for subscribers is that they won’t need to make an additional purchase for a separate pay-per-view package.

An alternative option is available for those not subscribed to the Disc Golf Network; non-subscribers can choose to purchase a pay-per-view (PPV) package. This package will grant non-subscribers access to the same exciting tournament coverage, allowing them to enjoy all the action even if they haven’t subscribed to the network. It’s a flexible solution for those who may not want a full subscription but still want to catch all the thrilling disc golf action.

Q: What’s the partnership between Disc Golf Network and USDGC all about?

A: The partnership between Disc Golf Network and USDGC has been growing over three seasons. This year, they are focusing on delivering comprehensive live coverage enriched with pre-game and post-game insights from Tournament Central. They will also offer an exclusive feature hole broadcast to deliver non-stop action all day. Maybe we will see another ace on hole 17?

Q: What is this year’s live coverage schedule for 2023 USDGC and TPWDGC?

A: Live coverage of the USDGC and TPWDGC will be available exclusively on the Disc Golf Network for rounds 2-4. Round one will be available for free on the DGPT YouTube Channel The broadcast schedule will follow the typical flow of FPO playing in the morning and MPO playing in the afternoon. Q: What’s the significance of the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship (TPWDGC)?

A: The Throw Pink Women’s Championship represents another chapter in the rich tournament history at Winthrop. The original Women’s National Championship was held at Winthrop in 1999, 2000, and again in 2001 after being renamed the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship.

Due to forced schedule changes from the COVID-19 pandemic, the TPWDGC brought back Elite FPO competition to Winthrop to give top players a chance to compete at the end of the year. While TPWDGC is not a DGPT event or a PDGA Pro Major (it is only an A-tier), it represents the opportunity for FPO competitors to tackle one of the most well-known courses on Tour and maintain the same exclusive nature as the USDGC; women are only allowed to compete after qualifying at a select number of events.

While it isn’t the official U.S. Women’s Championship, it is still a special event we’re glad to broadcast each season!

Q: Will there be post-produced coverage for these events?

A:   The Disc Golf Network is thrilled to announce that JomezPro will produce post-event coverage for the USDGC and TPWDGC. This coverage will be exclusively available on the Disc Golf Network during the event. It will later be released on JomezPro’s YouTube channel starting on Thursday, October 19, before being made available on US Disc Golf’s YouTube channel later.

Q: Does this mean that regular weekly JomezPro coverage will be behind the Disc Golf Network paywall now?

A: No, not at all! The JomezPro coverage of the USWDGC and TPWDGC is a unique event made possible by the Disc Golf Network. As previously announced, coverage of DGPT Elite Events, DGPT Playoffs, and certain PDGA Pro Majors (including the PDGA Pro World Championships and the USWDGC) will still be accessible for free on the JomezPro YouTube channel the following day.

Subscribe to Disc Golf Network to watch next-day post-pro coverage for this event with no stops in coverage for YouTube ads. Then, look forward to your regularly scheduled next-day lead card MPO and FPO coverage on YouTube from JomezPro on the Disc Golf Pro Tour.

Q: What can viewers expect regarding Skins Matches during the USDGC?

A: This year, fans can look forward to not one but two skins matches during the USDGC. There will be a standard 18-hole skins match on Sunday, October 1, at the Winthrop Arena, available to USDGC VIP/Gold/Pink/Silver pass holders or for purchase on the DGPT Eventbrite page

An additional 9-hole skins match featuring previous USDGC Champions such as Ken Climo, Barry Shultz, and Will Shustrick will also occur on Friday, October 6. It will be available to all USDGC spectator pass holders.

Q: How can viewers access these Skins Matches?

A: The video of the Sunday Skins Match will be released for free on GK Pro’s YouTube Channel on Tuesday, October 3. The video of the 9-hole skins match will be available exclusively on the Disc Golf Network starting on Tuesday, October 10, and will remain on the platform exclusively through the end of the season before being released on the GK Pro YouTube channel.

Q: What’s included in the Total Media Package for these events?

A: This content is included in the Disc Golf Network Subscription and a stand-alone pay-per-view package, priced at $24.99, which is available as a secondary option for non-subscribers.
