The Disc Golf Pro Tour Elite Series continues after a stop in Lockport, IL for the Clash at the Canyons Silver Series event.
July 9th – 11th, the DGPT will be in Des Moines, IA for the Des Moines Challenge, presented by Discraft, which was added to the tour following the postponement of PCS Sula in Norway. This marks the 17th year that the Des Moines Challenge has been an A-tier event, but is the first time that it has been a DGPT event.
The Disc Golf Pro Tour now shifts to a city and a venue in Des Moines with a long history of running high-level events, including the 2004 Pro World Championships. Ty Tannat, owner of Wander Disc Golf, will serve as the Tournament Director and run the event with the Des Moines Metro Disc Golf Club, a club with a fantastic history that includes disc golf legends Jay & Des Reading. Pickard Park, the course being used, notably was designed by Julianna Korver, 5x World Champion, who is also registered for the event.
The FPO division will have 25 competitors, 17 of which are 900+ rated. With big names like Page Pierce, Catrina Allen, Kristin Tattar, and Juliana Korver, the small field will still have a lot of excitement and a high level of play. Pierce and Allen are fresh off an unbelievable finish at Worlds, where Allen overtook Pierce on the 18th hole on the final day to lock up her 2nd World title. However, these two stalwarts will have to watch their backs as a number of other FPO players could easily challenge them for the title this weekend.
- Kristin Tattar will try to pick up on another win after taking down last weekend’s Clash at the Canyons
- Sarah Gilpin is registered and will have to fight through tougher competition to defend her 2019 win
- 2021 Challenge will have 17 900+ rated FPO players, while the 2019 Challenge only had 1
In the MPO division, there will be another stacked field, filled with a good number of top touring pros. Mirroring the FPO division, we’ll see the top 2 finishers from Worlds back on the course this weekend, James Conrad and Paul McBeth, whose Hole 18 at World’s was even more exciting than Allen and Pierece’s. Challenging them this weekend will be the likes of Ricky Wysocki, Calvin Heimburg, Kevin Jones, and Nikko Locastro.
- Ben Callaway will be in attendance to defend his 2019 win
- Terry Rothlisberger, fresh off a 2nd place finish at Clash at the Canyons, also got 2nd place at the 2019 Challenge
- 2021 Challenge will have 57 1000+ rated MPO players, while the 2019 Challenge only had 7
