2018 MVP Open: Round 1 Recap – Tight at the Top

Honestly, I don’t quite know what to say, but what I can say is that the theme of today is ties on the leaderboard. On the FPO side the two leaders of this year’s DGPT season, Paige Pierce and Sarah Hokom, are tied for first at 2 under par. On the MPO side Nikko Locastro hold’s sole possession of first place at 8 under par but there is a six-way tie for second at 6 under. We’ve got full coverage of both divisions or you but if you’re looking for a quick recap you’re in the right place, let’s get into it.
Pierce started a little bit hotter than Hokom with a birdie on hole 1, but a bogey on hole 2 would put her right back on track with Hokom. Neither of them would birdie again until hole 8 where Hojom picked up her first birdie to start working of the double bogey she took on hole 6. Both of them rode the roller coaster in the heart of the course with a  smattering of birdies and bogies. Pierce finished strong birdieing from hole 15-18 while Hokom threw a par on 15 but birdied from 16 on. Rounding out tomorrows lead card will Rebecca Cox and Paige Bjerkaas who are tied for third at even to par. Catch our full coverage of the FPO division from Seth Fendley here.
.For the MPO division the day belongs to Nikko Locastro shooting the hot round, and current course record with the new layout, at 8 under par. Having played today myself, the idea of shooting 8 under seems absolutely absurd despite the perfect conditions. Subtext…Maple Hill plays hard – tentatively, 1000 rated is currently right between 1 and 2 over. It starts tough and finishes punishing with holes 1 and 18 finishing in the top 5 hardest holes on the day with 18 playing on average .54 over par and hole 1 playing .42 over par. With a six-way tie between Steve Brinster, Nate Sexton, Matt Dollar, Paul McBeth, Calvin Heimburg, and Austin Hannum for second tomorrow is really anyone’s game so make sure you don’t miss any of it. Catch our full coverage of the MPO division here.

Wow. Just Wow. Maple Hill always delivers and under a new banner as the MVP Open it has not fallen short. Nikko may be in first, Pierce and Hokom may be tied right now, but Maple Hill giveth and Maple Hill taketh. There are no guarantees and there are plenty of pros in the hunt in both divisions till. If you can make it here by tomorrow you won’t regret it, if not, watch us live starting tomorrow at 2 PM with recap coverage of the FPO side and live coverage of the MPO side at 3:15 PM EST. Until then go find a basket, point your headlights at it and take a couple hundred putts. Who knows, the 2019 MVP Open.
