MATCH PLAY IS BACK

Head-to-head competition returns to the Disc Golf Pro Tour in 2025 with an expanded match play format. This season, thirty-two players (16 MPO, 16 FPO) will compete throughout the season in group play, battling for a spot in an end-of-season Championship at Hornet’s Nest in Charlotte, NC (Nov. 7-9).

Disc Golf Network will provide live coverage of two feature cards in each division at group play events throughout the season and full coverage of the Match Play Championship in Charlotte. Coverage will be available to both DGN Pro and DGN Standard subscribers. The first group play round at the Kansas City Wide Open will also be streamed on the DGPT YouTube channel.

COMPETITION FORMAT

GROUP PLAY

Initially, the 16 players in each division will be split into four groups of four players. These groups will compete in head-to-head match play throughout the season. Once group play is complete, the top two players in each group will advance to the Championship. Group play matches will award points to players, which will be tracked throughout the year on this page. In group play, winning a match is worth 3 points, a tie is worth 1 point, and a loss is worth 0 points.

Each player will face the other three competitors in their group before Championship weekend. To provide flexibility for player travel and scheduling, the Tour will offer multiple group play opportunities throughout the season, of which each player must compete in three. These head-to-head group play matches will take place in the days before standard stroke play begins at the following DGPT events.

CHAMPIONSHIP AT HORNET’S NEST

After group play concludes at the Green Mountain Championship, the top two players from each group will advance to the Championship in Charlotte, NC, at Hornet’s Nest Disc Golf Course. In the event of a tie for Championship qualification after group play, the tiebreaker will be head-to-head results. If there is still a tie, it will be broken by hole differential in match play scoring (win margin). Additional tiebreakers may be added as needed. The Match Play Championship will take place over three days, featuring eight players per division in a three-round, single-elimination bracket.

PLAYER QUALIFICATION

The 32-player field is comprised of players who qualified via one of the three methods listed below.

Qualification Qualified Players
2024 DGPT All-Star Awards 12 FPO & 12 MPO
Tour Director Pick 2 FPO & 2 MPO
DGPT World Standings after The Open at Austin 2 FPO & 2 MPO

All 2024 All-Stars (12 FPO & 12 MPO) were invited to compete in Match Play this year. However, three FPO and one MPO All-Stars were unable to participate in the complete series. Thus, their spots have been awarded to other players. In the FPO field, two spots were passed down via the 2025 World Standings, and one additional player was added as a Tour Director pick. In the MPO division, one spot was passed down via the 2025 World Standings.

GROUP PLAY STANDINGS

UPDATE – November 4th, 2025: Due to changes in player availability, Chris Dickerson will replace Isaac Robinson at the Match Play Championship and compete against Anthony Barela in round one. Check out the full FPO and MPO brackets below. If you filled out a bracket for the Match Play Championship on Hold My Bag, be sure to adjust your picks!

During group play, competitors earn points based on their individual match play results, and standings are tracked at the group level. At the end of group play, the top two players in each group qualify for the Match Play Championship.

  • Win = 3 points
  • Tie = 1 point
  • Loss = 0 points

In the event of a tie for Championship qualification after group play, the tiebreaker will be head-to-head results. If there is still a tie, it will be broken by hole differential in match play scoring (win margin). Additional tiebreakers may be added as needed.
