The Stafford property has historical significance, as George Washington himself granted this land to the Stafford family for their help in the Revolutionary War. The family maintained the property as a horse farm until the Township of Voorhees NJ bought the property and preserved the land as open space dedicated for outdoor passive recreation, of which disc golf fits perfectly.
The disc golf course was approved in the late fall of 2011, and the front 9 baskets were installed on July 28th, 2012. Stafford Open tournament started in 2013 as a C tier, the “Stafford Woods Open” when the course was only 9 holes. The course expanded to 18 holes in 2014. From 2013-2015 this event was a C tier. In 2016 it stepped up to a B tier, as the club grew and the volunteer base grew, the event was able to handle larger-scale events. Growth continued and in 2018, Stafford Open was approved as an A-tier and was the first A tier ever held in the state of New Jersey. 2021 will be the 4th consecutive A tier for Stafford Open, and the 8th year of the event overall.
