This new award is intended to recognize a player who either returned from injury, busted a career slump with a strong season, returned to a full tour after a life event, or otherwise returned to the top of the game after being off the scene for a period of time. The nominees for the 2023 DGPT Comeback Player of the Year are;

MPO:

-Paul Ulibarri: In 2022, Paul Ulibarri participated in 13 DGPT/Major events, with his best finish being 15th place at the 2022 USDGC and the 2022 MVP Open. His average round rating stood at 1,012.083. Moving to 2023, Ulibarri took part in 15 DGPT/Major events, achieving an improved 4th place at the LWS Open at Idlewild compared to the previous year. His average round rating also saw a boost, reaching 1,015.526.

-James Proctor: In 2022, James Proctor participated in 12 DGPT/Major events, securing his best placement at 15th in the 2022 USDGC. His average round rating at the time was 1,021.583, but he didn’t manage to break into the top-10. Fast forward to 2023, Proctor competed in 18 DGPT/Major events and achieved an impressive 2nd place finish at the PCS Open. His average round rating soared to 1,036.667, and he cracked the top-10 a total of 9 times, marking a 50% improvement.

-Ricky Wysocki: In the 2023 season, Ricky Wysocki participated in 14 DGPT/Major events. Early in the year, a wrist injury sidelined him, causing him to miss several events. His season began at the Open at Austin, where he finished 115th, marking his worst performance in the past two years. Despite a few initial setbacks, his win at the Preserve Championship marked a turning point in his year. Following this victory, he consistently secured top-10 placements in all DGPT Elite/Major events, with only two exceptions where he finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

FPO:

-Valarie Mandujano: Valerie Mandujano’s remarkable 2022 season featured two victories (Portland Open and WACO Annual Charity Open), along with an impressive 10 top-10 finishes (63%) and a 100% cash rate. However, her 2023 season faced a setback when she suffered a Grade 3 ankle sprain, a three-month recovery injury, forcing her to miss a significant portion of the season. Upon her return, she seamlessly resumed her top-tier performance. In the 9 DGPT/Major events she competed in, she secured top-10 placements 6 times (67%), cashing in 8 out of the 9 events (89%), and even clinched a victory at the LWS Open at Idlewild.

-Ali Smith: In 2022, Ali Smith’s involvement was limited to just 4 DGPT/Major events, with her best performance being 26th place, and she didn’t cash in any of those events. However, 2023 marked a significant improvement for Ali. Among the 16 DGPT/Major events she entered, she secured top-10 finishes 4 times (25%) and cashed in 14 of them (88%). Her most notable achievement was her 7th place finish at the PDGA World Championships, a substantial jump from her 42nd place finish in 2022.

-Stacie Rawnsley: In 2022, Stacie Rawnsley competed in 13 DGPT/Major events, cashing in at 7 (54%) but falling short of a top-10 finish. Her average round rating was 938.333. The following year, in 2023, she upped her game. Rawnsley participated in 17 DGPT/Major events, cashing in at 14 (82%) and securing top-10 placements twice. Her notable achievement was a 3rd-place finish at the TruBank Des Moines Challenge, and her average round rating improved to 949.
